Additional Thoughts about Therapeutic Music in the Healthcare Environment

HealthcareThis will be our last blog post in this on-going series of discussing therapeutic music in the healthcare setting. I have a few thoughts or observations from doing this work since 1996 (yes, it’s really been that long!):

  • Sometimes I am not told much about the patient, the family and/or their situation. Even without information, I am amazed at the miracles that occur at the bedside with the harp. It is an intuitive process and unfolds as it is supposed to.
  • Not usually, but occasionally, patients refuse harp therapy. This is one thing patients are empowered to say yes or no. While patients can’t say “no” to a nurse, they are empowered to make a choice about music. If they say no, I never take it personally.
  • Patients, families and staff – all benefit from the musical bedside experience. Sometimes, the caregivers or staff need the music as much as anyone.

It has been our joy to share examples and stories over the past several weeks/months about this beautiful work that we are so passionate about. Please contact us if you’d like more information.

Always Protected

Always ProtectedI had an interesting thing happen at one of my Christmas gigs this past December. It was a very cold night and the parking lot was a sheet of ice … not exactly ideal conditions for moving a harp (or body)!!

After the event, I began packing my car. I had one more item – my harp! – to retrieve and put in my car before heading home. When I got to the church door, it was locked; my main contact was standing on the other side of the door (inside the church), trying to open the door, but the security system had already “set” and there was no budging! I was left sanding out in the cold. My client turned around to go get help and I heard a faint “click.” I tried the door and it opened!!

A miracle? Yes! And in that moment, I was reminded I am always protected.

100 Days of Miracles

100 Days of MiraclesWe recently completed a “course” called 100 Days of Miracles. It is actually a game with three mini decks of cards to draw daily–angels, butterflies, and peacocks. You may ask why these three symbols? The developer, Jean Berry, of the Business Miracle Academy, shares, “Angels are reflective of the inner work that we do to create a successful business, peacocks symbolize the outer work and butterflies are all about collaboration.”

So, for 100 days, it was a daily draw. We loved the messages and the action steps from each of the three cards. As we completed these items, it really moved our work/life forward…a lot!! And yes, we experienced miracles upon miracles, and we are grateful.

And now we recognize why only 100 days…why not keep going to manifest more dreams coming true?!

Painting Miracles

My PaintingAre you a painter? I am not! However, I have been participating in a really unique art/painting miracles experience!

It is located in Jean Berry’s studio in Burnsville, MN, and she hosts 2 or 3 people to paint acrylics on canvas. It is “intuitive painting” so the idea is to let your arm flow, covering the canvas with color, objects, ideas, etc. While painting, Jean interviews the attendees about what we want clarity, balance and wisdom on and she draws (on a separate canvas) her ideas, key words and intuits possible next steps for our topic/issue. It is a really unique way to be coached … and I’d highly recommend it!

While I feel like I’ll never be a great painter (yes, I think I’ll stick to playing the harp!!), I’ve definitely gotten some rich insights using this unique process. Oh, and the picture for this blog entry is one that I painted!!
