Playing the Harp in the Hallway of the Hospital

Hospital corridorI play the harp in patients’ rooms, but also in the hospital corridors or hallways.

Staff who do such important work (housekeeping, unit secretaries, nurse managers, etc.) may not be thanked for their contributions and they need the music as much as anyone. When I play in the hallways or at a nursing station, these hard-working employees can pause for a moment to “fill their wells.”

Playing in these locations, I see very busy healthcare staff and stressed family members stopping for a moment to connect with their breath, lower their shoulders to release tension and just be. Many comment that they have never heard the harp or never seen it played up close and in person. Having it on the hospital floor offers a personal touch and a gentle reminder of self-care.

Music in the Dentist’s Chair

DentistI get stressed out going to the dentist! Do you?!

I was recently getting my teeth cleaned and I noticed the music that was playing. To be honest, it wasn’t my favorite. (I guess that’s what harpists notice when we’re out and about!)

I commented to my dental hygienist about this and she said each hygienist makes their own choices. I asked her if she would be open to something more relaxing – to help her and all her patients relax during the stress of these visits. She said. “Yes, as long as it’s on Pandora!”

I told her she was in luck! Several of my harp CDs are on Pandora. Click here for more information.

Next time I go to the dentist, I’ll be very curious to hear what music she is playing! I hope in the months that have passed, she has graced her patients with healing harp music to help keep them calm during these sometimes stressful visits.

When Violence Strikes – Got Music? (Part II)

Stop Violence - 2As soon as I posted the last blog about music and violence, I realized I had more to say about this important topic/issue.

Whenever violence “hits” us, we are left wondering why this continues to happen in our beloved country. Is it violent TV, movies and video games? Is it gun laws (or lack thereof)? Is it deep unrest in the depths of our souls? Is it a mental health issue? Is it geo-political? Is it stress-related? Or something else???

And as a harpist, I can’t help but ask, “How can my music help? How can I be a part of the solution? How can I assist and/or facilitate the healing process through music?” When the harp is played with a peaceful intention, it is music to soothe the soul, comfort our contemplative core, calm our jaggled nerves, and move us into deep rest.

After each violent episode, I reflect, “What is my intention with my music?” My answer – to bring peace. To nurture your heart. To relax you. To relieve stress. To facilitate healing. I am honored to help you with your journey. To receive the gifts I offer, click to watch videos, order CDs and/or music devices, and purchase downloads. Many continued blessings to you …

The Stress of Back-to-School

back to schoolFor children and teens, back-to-school time can be very stressful. First of all, the freedom that summer brings is over. Secondly, there can be a much earlier morning routine of breakfast, getting to the bus, etc. And third, headed back into the classroom brings uncertainty of new teacher(s), friends and environments. All of this amounts to stress and tension … and adults feel this, too. (Even if you don’t have children, there’s a “remembering feeling” that goes with this time of year.)

How can Musical Reflections help? Just a friendly reminder that we are here to provide relaxation, peace and calm to every day regardless of the stress you and your family feel. May soothing harp music bring you to a place of balance …
